It appears that this is because of the advertising clause of the license of the Ohio State University copyright of parts of conserver. It would be great to have conserver under FSF/OSI approved and DFSG compatible licenses so that we could have conserver in Debian main. Has the Ohio State University owned code been rewritten since 1998? Is it possible that the Ohio State University would consider relicensing their conserver code? I note that they have used BSD licenses in other open source code they have released. Is anyone willing to contact Ohio State University about this? https://sources.debian.org/src/nfdump/1.6.17-1/bin/ft2nfdump.c/?hl=3D8#L8 https://sources.debian.org/src/argus-clients/1:3.0.8.2-3/include/argus/cflo= wd.h/?hl=3D2#L2 https://sources.debian.org/src/flow-tools/1:0.68-12.5/lib/ftmap.c/?hl=3D2#L= 2 --=20 bye, pabs https://bonedaddy.net/pabs3/ --=-fpIfXYv0NNP9z6AHlU8w Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEYQsotVz8/kXqG1Y7MRa6Xp/6aaMFAl0ceOsACgkQMRa6Xp/6 aaPtJhAAjkaveMGh7U9bfFiDKrc+Xjq55s3r8GMm/oSPTKdOLI11zsWwXvc4p59Z TANv7NvO2+CTDUQZ00DorGzaG9xKjDHjrph6tGYsh24Hg0U82O2tO5tWCpRKhDNM 8JayX+6H4DRtYw1hAp5RvMnRBU5XutXbQyrR0nkqKP4pYncbQs9QkUL6G4Ih+yC3 br36cFl83DOJg4t2jhC04mu/jchUArlyIi6ju/ouDJAx7fbTw5mf3rjZ4t3lmjOL 9Fd0UFMjkj6Bw69EZQgkBxbDAICt7r4sO3BeNwaDPSMIuyYTCs/ml7u1LYzMjKVW EBhL9RJugzDqZAx1SIUVN6Ijov2YJUTj2yMk4dcLV5X+gId987IWlcZlAMyw0x5L ERMQXsPVDKkjZ2uOUMO6Isv8AtkKb91Z/yC24XccMr0IGW3MWuF/ZA0QPZ+zNiSw 7JQwhsfpHJVd32bEhpGwwVBgo+OP6zgmA76TxQG+UYIdEwUXJIktvFcXPGqbe6gc BujM4nS4fJU0AdUElKqRlDGvbnS53JfkBhWjRz+8sp4u708Z2o+HgY6ywqURnIo9 iu+TLUYtuOQg9MIPMOnk6dlufX4B9EgiTpOBTKL3YuZvDTyM/bV8WeyD760oVgE0 4yUw+aaqu8ocJri32pWQFpMSxyCflFU/jmWN3mEK/RwQOte25xQ= =7/Xe -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-fpIfXYv0NNP9z6AHlU8w-- From bryan@conserver.com Thu Jul 4 08:20:09 2019 Return-Path: X-Original-To: conserver-users@localhost Delivered-To: conserver-users@localhost Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ziggybow.stansell.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5DC4A4C4DA for ; Thu, 4 Jul 2019 08:20:09 +0000 (UTC) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at ziggybow.stansell.org Received: from ziggybow.stansell.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ziggybow.stansell.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 329IZASbDR4U for ; Thu, 4 Jul 2019 08:20:08 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [192.168.0.4] (host-90-232-143-252.mobileonline.telia.com [90.232.143.252]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: bryan@stansell.org) by ziggybow.stansell.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 3A3C73FA9B for ; Thu, 4 Jul 2019 08:20:08 +0000 (UTC) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=conserver.com; s=s0001; t=1562228408; bh=N9NQClf5fvvT9jxXVFLKz5wAkqQQRc5CxVr4Zn0rKRM=; h=From:Subject:Date:References:To:In-Reply-To; b=Kift/zPUeu60h8QbFL439zrXSnDeNUqAfBaC7LbvphzayzQgCmjMG0AWRA6Xetx2f nuhW+Va0tBKtkz9gaGAsaThwySnExJwSdp0/pY/4IF8/MJNfS61CqFHhOW8fekS1en Oqc+KMqkQxpOUNI2u+0Heg29Ym+WBxFc5ke1LvHGrhB9jAYag65e0kQ4/TZu6cSJan euZ/AIYkALTJHknX/5IbInvB8O7GIh7Ok0el3chYeg5XeEOIO+zE2b2ytdPLYedReV 3ipsB13reRnKcc3Om8Zzxvl+O5pPiG38wnqaTieYiHCWawBdjD/Sw8h7R4bY8acpR0 tmnRC/sA9T3GA== From: Bryan Stansell Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.4 \(3445.104.11\)) Subject: Re: license change? They are in the distribution "sid" and the "non-free" part (because the Ohio State license doesn't explicitly allow for modification to the code, even though it's totally implied and the intention of the author - I've even got proof in email! Oh well, can't blame the Debian folks for being cautious - they've been burned before, apparently). So, it=E2=80=99s more the lack of explicitly stating the code can be = modified. And, as it says, I had (probably still have, somewhere) an = email from the author clarifying, but I=E2=80=99m not sure how we=E2=80=99= d be able to get the license officially updated. Debian generally accepts email clarifications, so just publishing that and adding a note to the LICENSES file should be enough for Debian. Of course getting a more explicit re-licensing would be better. > Anyone even know who=E2=80=99d be responsible for this type of thing ther= e? I couldn't find any evidence of an Open Source Lab there and after a bit of searching, the Technology Commercialization Office seems like the closest thing to a copyright holder contact for the conserver code. innovation@osu.edu https://tco.osu.edu/ --=20 bye, pabs https://bonedaddy.net/pabs3/ --=-k6ctLZ2Y8uqJY6xKZ3ZJ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEYQsotVz8/kXqG1Y7MRa6Xp/6aaMFAl0du9YACgkQMRa6Xp/6 aaNjtBAAtkZh7xfaY3rtlUOzeTduhgK6/dPOw4ethwEHoUPatbIPhHDrvP5zAdmy ebcTwBXr2VtyoOFnLFDrA2Tqfzcn+l2+YFDltS2bEtwmf/U3+69DHOF0vtrOtVuE SIDSBjf1ktG8/idJHRcFp61TcABDEYgu4wn5UzqK66z+NTpyYPjvSLNdtDX3Zpge e23kOVTOfeiKtaNQVLakXj/frVz5rD8OWubnvPaGU+mMyVH9955WhwMGS5vrdibo +0fn/YtjeMh8qgyScnsVMRbHo+w9x0OxRvLXBAzJ2keooLgLrHnAw9dNUa0Ec3S6 90AMGTg3aUS6ZZcSHK7thFO1NEb+4Zz3tdbEjbFi6bKSXFPgi6BzSgK5P/CeXb71 CsNP8G/EHqwIycF/+UV/DzZPmQZLDrDH2z+gbtAgOYAxisV9OCv2xGFiNQZqon1m oY+Q25ugqHgIGRWWSTYbSNCk1F+IdnK0sdmssGKh8sZ64p0LA2AE9ELDxYmUoReR KlL4vboaYWuWseGn9KYj1KqQ6VOeR+eda2Ihhq9RdOHjuRwa4XwKrLfIPD70YKl8 pJcdlorKYiM8OelX/A6PscfdzYay5Ei+nHjY6qXLuv/3s3ON1A6Jn5HvAznE1+N/ 9P7WQPeIUaWUvXfw1jOc7XuaZqNDi1eX2+z4oRutBqV012Cj9io= =ezXc -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-k6ctLZ2Y8uqJY6xKZ3ZJ--
