How do you start the service???..do I need to connect it to server or switches in order to make it work or is it possible to have test environment on stand alone server??

Eric was trying to tell you that conserver is probably already included
in Ubuntu.  You don't need to build it yourself, just install it.

It probably installed to /usr/local.
